Pawn Loan FAQ
Pawn loans can be a simple way to get short-term cash without selling your items outright. Below are answers to the questions we hear most often at Larsen’s Jewelry & Half Interest Pawn. For a full overview of our services, visit our Pawn & Jewelry Services page.
How does a pawn loan work?
A pawn loan is a short-term loan secured by an item you bring in as collateral. We evaluate the item, make you an offer, and if you accept, we keep the item safely stored while you repay the loan. Once it’s paid off, you pick up your item. If you choose not to repay the loan, the item stays with us and is resold, and there is no impact on your credit score.
What’s the difference between pawning and selling?
When you pawn an item, you are using it as collateral for a loan. The goal is to get the item back after the loan is repaid. When you sell an item, you receive a one-time payment and the item becomes ours to resell. Some people prefer pawning if the item has sentimental value, while others choose to sell when they no longer want or need the item.
What kinds of items can I pawn?
Common pawn items include gold and silver jewelry, Black Hills Gold, watches, certain electronics, tools, coins, and some collectibles. Condition, brand, and demand all matter. If you’re not sure, you can text photos to (605) 850-9455 or use our contact form to ask before you drive in.
Do you check my credit for a pawn loan?
No. Pawn loans are based only on the value of your collateral. We do not run credit checks for pawn loans, and pawn loans do not show up on your credit report.
How long do I have to repay a pawn loan?
Loan terms are explained when we write up your ticket and can vary depending on the amount and item. We review the due dates and options with you at the counter so you understand your time frame. If you have questions about a current loan, give us a call at (605) 845-3759.
Can I extend or renew a pawn loan?
In many cases, yes. As long as you stay in contact and pay the required charges on time, we can often work with you on extending or renewing a pawn loan. The exact options depend on the loan and item, so please call or stop in to talk through your situation.
What happens if I can’t pay the pawn loan back?
If you’re unable to repay your pawn loan, the item stays with the shop and is resold. There is no collection activity and it does not affect your credit score. While we always encourage you to stay in touch if you’re having trouble, we understand that sometimes plans change and an item may simply need to move on.
Cash for Gold & Selling Items FAQ
Selling gold, silver, or coins can feel like a big decision. Our goal is to make the process transparent and pressure-free. For a full breakdown of our process, see our Cash for Gold page.
Do I need an appointment to sell gold or jewelry?
No appointment is required — walk-ins are welcome during business hours. For large collections or estates, calling ahead can help us set aside time just for you so we can go through everything carefully without rushing the process.
How do you determine what my gold is worth?
We test the metal to confirm its karat, weigh it on a calibrated scale, and make an offer based on current market prices, purity, and condition. All testing is done where you can see it, and we explain each step so you know exactly how we arrived at the number before you decide whether to sell.
What kinds of gold do you buy?
We buy most gold jewelry (even broken pieces), scrap gold, certain coins and bullion, and some estate pieces. Single earrings, damaged chains, and out-of-style pieces can all have value for their metal content. If you are unsure about something, bring it in or text photos to (605) 850-9455.
Can I get a ballpark estimate over the phone or by text?
We can sometimes give general guidance based on photos and descriptions, but exact offers require in-person testing and weighing. Photos are still helpful, especially if you’re driving from out of town and want to know whether it’s worth bringing certain items.
Can I change my mind after you give me an offer?
Absolutely. You’re never required to sell. If the offer doesn’t feel right, you can take your items back and think it over with no pressure. We would rather have you feel good about your decision than feel rushed.
